Pixar Protagonists - Best to Worst
10 Pixar protagonists, over the course of 13 films. Here they are, 10-1. This blog will differ from my favourite characters blog, because protagonists need to do so much more. Enjoy and check back occasionally!
For me, McQueen left the least impact out of all the protagonists. Just like his films, I suppose. He may have been quite an imaginative, but he left quite a lot to be desired. He lacks the warmth and charm (like the films!) that has made Pixar so great in the past. Another thing that makes him so disappointing is the fact he was created by Pixar head-honcho John Lasseter himself. Is weird to think Lasseter could give us this.
My Favourite Moment: Lightning and Mater going tractor tripping, I enjoyed Mater more than McQueen though, what does that say?
9. Bob Parr - The Incredibles.
Boy there was some indecision on this one! I've had three number nines for this list. They have been swapped drastically, now they are in the right order. Mr Incredible was more entertaining in the films advert (where he tries to squeeze the belt over his stomach) than in the film itself! Despite this, he still provides some entertainment and action (let's face it, he's a good father in the end) so I think he deserves a place above Lightning McQueen.
My Favourite Moment: The films advert, it left me in stitches.
These too are classed as the protagonists of the Toy Story trilogy by Pixar. I have never really preferred them to other characters, but being the protagonists in one of the best series of films ever deserves recognition, eh? So I placed them eighth. They are a fantastic paring and the depth they display is applaudable, but they lack something special for me. I still adore them, naturally.
My Favourite Buzz Moment: SPANISH BUZZ. Never have I laughed more in a cinema, how absolutely magnificent was that?
My Favourite Woody Moment: Woody leading the escape from Sunnyside, heroic and thoroughly entertaining.
Ahh good old Carl. He is interesting. Carl seems like a grumpy old sod at first. He injuries a man, slams a door in the face of Russel (who is great too) and rejects Dug AND Kevin. But, he shows in the montage at the start of Up, that he is a loving character and deserves adoration. He also displays extraordinary bravery later on, fighting off Charles Muntz, whilst trying to save his companions and house. And he adopts Russel, showing that he truly is a wonderful person.
My Favourite Moment: Carl is sitting on the stannah stairlift. It stops. *THUMP*. It starts again. We all had a laugh at that didn't we?
Flik is simply a hard-working, loyal ant, who wants nothing more than for his colony to prosper. Unfortunately, he isn't very good at it! Flik still captured my imagination though. He was very amusing, running around being a nuisance. Much like myself! He does his best, bless him, but it never goes right until the end. Thankfully, the circus bugs and Dot see him in the way I do. He really is great, simply because of the things I said at the start. He is joyous.
My Favourite Moment: Flik investigating the bug city. Particularly when he walks into the bar and encounters a whole host of bugs getting drunk. I loved the mosquito most of all.
The big cuddly monster was the cool, steady protagonist of Monster's Inc. Even if he is overshadowed by Mike at times, he still provides the depth of the film, something crucial in a Pixar flick. His relationship with Boo really carries the film, they provide the pure emotion and characters like Mike and Roz give it comedy. Sulley is great despite this, he is a marvel to behold in technical terms. Imagine the work required to animate all those little hairs! Huge respect to Pixar for being so ambitious.
My Favourite Moment: The EPIC door chase at the end, what a spectacle that was.
The lively, vocal red-head is the protagonist of Pixar's latest venture Brave. She was very entertaining, funny in parts and moving in others. Merida (along with her three triplet brothers, who are high on my favourite list) really made the film great. Even if it was fairly stereotypical Disney, the film still had that distaff twist in the middle. Merida had to lead her mother from the castle, providing a huge amount of comedy in a reasonably short space of time. Along with that, she was very brave (as the title suggests) standing up to her own father.
My Favourite Moment: With the help of Harris, Hubert and Hamish, she leads her mother out of the castle, in the most hilarious way possible.
Some people said this rat was too big for his boots. All I can say is, he doesn't have any boots. I liked Remy. He was ambitious, on a narrative and technical level. He had a good spectrum of moments in Ratatouille, which by the way I thought was excellent (see one of my other blogs), mainly because of him and his intellectually challenged brother. As well as this, I loved the way he narrated the story, a first for Pixar. Another thing I loved about Remy is the short film 'Your Friend The Rat'. I enjoyed the goofy style he portrayed, that was missing in the film.
My Favourite Moment: Remy and the rats cooking Ego's meal at the end, using any method possible. It's a wonderful piece of imagination.
Waaaaaaaalleee. Eeeeeevaaa. Directive? That's all he says! Over 100 minutes of animation and the protagonist utters three words. THREE! With these two words, he boasts more charm and exuberance than most of the characters on this list. He is highly amusing, as the scene with the fire-extinguisher shows and he is capable of bringing a tear to the eye of even grown men, as is shown through basically the whole film! Even if Wall-E isn't one of my favourite Pixar films, it's title character still has such excellence that he deserves the silver medal.
My Favourite Moment: The fire extinguisher scene, never have I ever wanted to do something more.
Marlin. Marlin, Marlin, Marlin, Marlin. This heroic little clown fish (who, by the way, is only funny with Dory) risks life and limb to save Nemo, in one of the most beloved films on the planet. He is just a normal father, trying to do best for his son. Some people misinterpret this, they think he's a grumpy old sod, however he is just doing what he was created to do, be fantastic. Without this, the film would have no plot or narrative, so we wouldn't have Finding Nemo! What a dark and terrible world would that be hey?
My Favourite Moment: There's so many! I loved Marlin, Dory and Nigel storming into the dentists and I loved Marlin meeting Crush. I think the latter just takes it. Bravo.
